Pour, Petr ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
The purpose of the work is to analyze cartoon humor on the pages of the humorous and satirical magazine Dikobraz between November 1989 and December 1992. This period was a significant change in the political system for Czechoslovakia. The communist totalitarian regime was replaced by a democratic establishment. At the end of this period, there was a division into independent Czech and Slovak republics. For the purposes of the work, the professional literature devoted to the observed period, especially in the political sphere, was studied. Furthermore, 162 issues of the magazine Dikobraz were studied, or Nový Dikobraz. In the practical part, selected political and social events and their depiction with the help of cartoon humor are presented.
"Human Laughter, Class Struggle Hatred": Art and Political Parties Propaganda in Czechoslovakia between 1918 and 1939
TOMÁŠ, Adam
This research is aimed to interpret some of the important moments during the time between the two world wars in Czechoslovakia, mainly their visual aspect such as propaganda material and specific mythology. Theoretical prologue is followed by twelve more or less autonomous chapters focused on individual phenomenons, especially political caricature, as being reflected in the press of the first Czechoslovak republic. Introductional theoretical chapters cover the problematic of propaganda, as well as other particularly linguistic fields, which at that time were newly applied to visual image. The issues mentioned, along with Roland Barthes' similar approach, lay groundwork for us to understand the idea of propagandistic power of image, such as enemy stereotypes, antisemitism, or ideologically biased image of tramping. The themes of the chapters were chosen in such a way, so that they would describe important events and phenomenons of the 1918-1939 era in Czechoslovakia, with emphasis on their ambivalence as well as on the fact that they are open to a new interpretation. This specific approach was also the reason why I omitted events such as establishment of the republic or the Munich Agreement from the thesis - we can consider the propaganda related references of these events in periodical press of the time as straightforward, and therefore not needed to be discussed. The most traditional propaganda material, for example fliers during election time, were not covered for the very same reason. I have intentionally placed the partially separate topic of national Sokol meetings, interpreted as the live image of the ruling democratic discourse in Czechoslovakia, at the end of my thesis.
Political satire in Charlie Hebdo in relation to religion
Kaletová, Anna ; Matějka, Ondřej (advisor) ; Bauer, Paul (referee)
The topic of the bachelor's thesis is the political satire in Charlie Hebdo in relation to religion. In today's France political satire is represented by several newspapers, one of which is the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. The magazine, whose origins date back to 1970, specializes in news and cartoons regarding current world affairs, religion, politics and culture. The cartoons published in Charlie Hebdo soon became a rather controversial topic. For that reason, the authors of the magazine have had a number of conflicts with representatives of the muslim community over the years, with cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad becoming especially problematic. The difficulties manifested themselves both in the form of threatening letters, the burning of the Charlie Hebdo editorial office, and a terrorist assassination in 2015. The bachelor's thesis maps the history of political satire in France, the history of the magazine Charlie Hebdo and its conflicts with Islam. The aim of the paper is to find out whether the Charlie Hebdo cartoons depicting Islam are in any way specific compared to the images mocking the other two major religious groups, Christianity and Judaism. Using ethnographic content analysis, analysis of selected cartoons published in 2014 and their subsequent comparison, research...

In these media three artist in both years were publishing: in MF DNES it is Miroslav Kemel, in Lidové noviny Vladimír Jiránek and in Právo Vladimír Renčín. For political satire research content analysis was used, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. Defined variables are used for grouping images. The research should accept/reject five hypothesis directed to topic frequencies (domestic, foreign, non-political), politicans shown as the target of satire and political tending of particular paper. The most popular target for political satire was Jiří Paroubek former leader of ČSSD due to his nature and physiognomy. This was true for MF Dnes and Lidové noviny. In Právo no concrete politican was drawn by V. Renčín in both years. In the first place topic Election was in 2006 in all papers, in 2010 only for MF Dnes it was Nr 1. In other paper most important topics were morality and demenaurs of politicans. This Thesis confirmed that left-winged paper Právo is not tending to the righ-wing ridiculing. On the contrary, the other newspapers, Lidové noviny and MF Dnes, both being right-wing newspapers, published the...
The Cult of an Artist at the Turn of the Century - A. Rodin and M. Aleš by M. Švabinský
Kučerová, Anežka ; Prahl, Roman (advisor) ; Rakušanová, Marie (referee)
This work focuses on forms of presentation and self-presentation of two important artists living at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries - a Czech painter Mikuláš Aleš and a French sculptor Auguste Rodin. It can be described as the so called cult of both artists, which means a perception of artist as an outstanding genius. This type of thinking about artists and their work was widely spread in the 19th century. Mikoláš Aleš (1852-1913) is known for his individual artistic style which was based on the Czech romantism and folk art, his style also partly anticipates Czech Art Nouveau. Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) was one of the most important French sculptors working at the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. He is considered to be a founder of modern sculpture. Many of his statues caused scandals which made him famous and well-known also among the Czech artists. Both artists were highly appreciated by young members of the Manes Association of Fine Artists. This Association was established in 1887, since 1897 the Volné směry journal were published. Mikoláš Aleš became the first elected president of this Association. Members of this Association were highly interested in modern trends in Czech and European art. It may be surprising that young members of the Manes Association were...

Běhavá, Aneta ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Groman, Martin (referee)
This thesis focuses on the depictions of Czech and Czechoslovak presidents in caricature. It deals with the timespan between the foundation of Czechoslovakia and the present, within which it examines the cartoon representations of presidents. The thesis deals with the period of the First Czechoslovak Republic, the Second Czechoslovak Republic, the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, the period from 1945 to 1948 (also known as the Third Czechoslovak Republic), the communist regime of the 1950s and 1960s, the Prague Spring, the era of normalization and the Velvet Revolution. It aims to describe the reasons why and how each president is depicted in one way or another within a given era, or in some cases why he is not depicted at all. The thesis pays special attention to the issues of freedom of the press and speech and also to the laws against the defamation of the head of state, and sees them as direct factors influencing the depictions. The thesis further aims to place the cartoons in their socio-political context and deduce from it what was the public perception of each head of state in the various stages of our history. The research sample is primarily based on period caricatures in the press, containing a wide spectrum of opinions and periodicity. The thesis also uses file catalogs of the most...
Image of the Other - Czechs in German Carricatures
Raková, Pavlína ; Emler, David (advisor) ; Filipová, Lucie (referee)
The thesis focuses on the image of Czechs in German caricatures. The image of Czechs is researched on caricatures through historical timeline consisting of milestones of Czech- German relationship. The first chapter focuses on Czech-German tension from times of Badeni's language ordinances to Ann's patents. Furthermore, the image of Czechs is investigated in period of Great War. The focus is primarily on the rise of independent Czechoslovakia because main hypothesis states that the image of Czechs was intensified after this event. The next researched time period is year 1933 as Nazi party took over. The last researched period is time period 1937-1939. The focus is on death of T. G. Masaryk. The thesis is complemented by Austrian caricatures which aim to extend the image of Czechs by Austrian view. The Austrian image of Czechs is then compared to German one. Analysis is made through image analysis of German and Austrian caricatures. The research is done on 35 historical caricatures and is supported by secondary literature. The caricatures were picked from major satirical-humoristic magazines such as Simplicissimus, Kladderadatsch, Fliegende Blätter, Kikeriki and Figaro.
Responses of Spanish Civil War in Propaganda Art in Czechoslovakia
TOMÁŠ, Adam
Spanish civil war was with no doubt a conflict which affected people around the world , including artists from Czechoslovakia. In my thesis I try to describe the significant influence of the war on some politically interrested Czechoslovak artists, and to present this influence on meaning and visual form of their works. International politics and art context in Europe between the World Wars caused sympathy of many progressive and avantgarde artists of that time towards Spanish antifascist republicans. These artists attemted to actively change or influence the events in Spain via their art and works. Relationships between the most active Czechoslovak artists, and their motivation, was strongly connected to their political beliefs and views (related to the situation in Spain, based on which fraction they supported), more than during any previous time period. In this cause we can find side by side liberal democrat Josef Čapek, 19th century anarchist Stanislav Kostka Neumann or Antonín Pelc, the propaganda star of Czechoslovak communist era after the year 1948. This broad coalition against fascism corresponded to spanish People's front. The main issues of my thesis are political and historical context of civil war, social situation in Europe, Spain and Czechoslovakia, meaning of chosen works and also formal signs, mainly because the form is usually influenced by the unstable 30s and progress of dictatorships in Europe as well.
Picture of the political East in the caricature in the French magazine Le Cannard enchîné in 1945-1970
Walsh, Diana ; Štoll, Martin (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on the analysis of caricatures with a theme of the Eastern block in French satirical weekly magazine Le Canard enchaîné in 1945-1970. By the Eastern block, we understand the Soviet Union and its associated socialistic countries. The thesis is anchored in the theoretical part by historical context of the history of the eastern countries, as well as by the development of analysed weekly magazine on the background of the history of France, by the formulation of the concepts of caricature and satire, including important authors, and the research methods themselves. Triangulation, in this case the combination of quantitative content analysis and semiotic analysis, aims to analyse individual caricatures with the theme of the East and its individual countries. The analysed periods are divided into two sections, due to the availability of materials, namely 1945-1948 and 1968-1970.
